Angelina Jolie's Emotional Meeting With Refugees in Malta (video)

Angelina Jolie is making the most of her time in Malta. As Brad Pitt shoots his latest film in the southern European country, the actress and UNHCR Goodwill Ambassador, 36, has been making a spate of humanitarian visits in the region.

On Sunday morning, Jolie visited two centers housing asylum-seekers in Malta, plus a similar camp on the Italian island of Lampedusa.

Over 1500 refugees have fled the violence from war-embattled Libya to Malta (via overcrowded boats) this year, with a troubling amount losing their lives during the dangerous overseas passage.

"Malta has saved many lives, but it is the daily conditions on the ground that are of most concern," Jolie said in Malta on Sunday morning. "We've spent time today speaking with the government and will spend more time talking about how, together, we can make the conditions more humane, especially for the children."

In this video, exclusive to Us Weekly, Jolie (greeted with cheers, hugs, and handmade signs) meets and speaks with men, women and children at one of those centers.

"We've spoken about our shared concerns about making sure asylum claims are processed as quickly as possible so no-one is sitting in a prison-like situation and waiting on a decision about their status, " she added.

"They are not asking to go to any particular country, they just want to find safety to work, and to have freedom," Jolie, who has long advocated for international refugees, added.
