Angelina Jolie's Top Priority: Protecting Orphans in Haiti

Throughout her incredibly successful career, Angelina Jolie has taken on a wealth of different roles. But, one thing that seems to never change is her world-renowned status as a champion for human rights, with a particular focus on protecting children in Third World countries.

Jolie returned to the SOS Village in Santo, Haiti, outside of Port-au-Prince last weekend to evaluate the progress made since her last trip more than six months ago, shortly after the Caribbean country was struck by a 7.0-magnitude earthquake.

“One of Angelina’s highest priorities is protecting children without family; she was there to meet with Haitian officials to try and figure out solutions,” said Heather Paul, CEO of SOS Children’s Villages, an organization that provides housing and long-term care for orphaned or abandoned children in 132 countries worldwide.

Both Jolie and her partner, Brad Pitt, have been longtime supporters of SOS, and, in the past, the 35-year-old star has visited an SOS Emergency Relief Program in Chad, an SOS Children’s Village in Ethiopia, and together the couple also sojourned to the SOS Village in Amman, Jordan.

And no surprises here – Jolie, who even brought toys to the children on her recent visit, creates quite a commotion whenever she comes to town.

“The children are out of their minds. They love her, she’s very hands on and spends time with them and that means a great deal,” Paul said. “Haiti is a hard place right now, our villages are overcrowded. We have 500 children instead of 200 children who are without parental care with us at the moment. We have 800 children in our school in the SOS village, so there are a lot of challenges. But just to have Angelina there recognizing these challenges really brings everybody up. It’s a wonderful thing.”

On the subject of schooling, another critical component of Jolie’s mission in Haiti is to ensure that as many young ones as possible find a place in the public education system.

“I’m sure Angelina was aware of how crowded conditions were, but she had to be inspired by the fact that we have so many children in school, and we are negotiating with the Haitian government now to have them construct more schools,” Paul told us. “I can imagine that Angelina would believe that public education for children in a country like Haiti is absolutely essential to the nation’s future.”

Jolie’s visit also has been beneficial to SOS in creating a resurgence of attention on the natural disaster zone, and reminding people that while six months have passed, the devastation rages on – but ultimately it is in the hands of each individual to decide where they want their charitable dollars to be spent.

“It is always a challenge (to keep up awareness), and now we have our domestic tsunami with the BP oil spill, so it's very understandable that America’s interest is split – we have a lot to deal with,” Paul added. “So each American needs to figure out how best to support the efforts they think are most important … But I always say, there are celebrities, then there are celebrities – Angelina does a terrific job in wearing all the different hats.”

Angelina Jolie is reportedly drawing plans to adopt an orphan from the quake-torn region of Haiti.

The actress, who shares six kids with partner Brad Pitt, was purportedly moved after visiting the paediatric ward of Dario Contreras Hospital in neighbouring Dominican Republic.

The Goodwill Ambassador for the United Nations High Commissioner for Refugees was said to have discussed relief aid with the country's president Leonel Fernandez, The Sun reported.

The 34-year-old star also mentioned the possibility of adopting a Haitian child, sources claimed.

A pal said: "She's made no secret of her desire to adopt again. Children in Haiti need help. It's a perfect opportunity."

Brad Pitt, Angelina Jolie Donate $1 Million to Doctors Without Borders

Brad Pitt and Angelina Jolie have made good on their promise to reach out to victims of the massive earthquake that struck the island of Haiti on Tuesday.

The couple donated $1 million to Doctors Without Borders for the organization's emergency medical operations in Haiti, UsMagazine.com has confirmed.

"It is incredibly horrible to see a catastrophe of this size hit a people who have been suffering from extreme poverty, violence and unrest for so many decades," Jolie -- who has served as a Goodwill Ambassador for the United Nations since 2001 -- said in a statement.

Pitt -- who, along with Jolie, has been a longtime supporter of Doctors Without Borders -- added, "We understand the first response is critical to serve the immediate needs of countless people who are now displaced from their homes, are suffering trauma, and most require urgent care."

Earlier on Wednesday, Pitt, 46, and Jolie, 34, said they were "devastated by the news" and pledged their support.

In a statement, the couple said, "We will work closely with our good friend Wyclef Jean to support the humanitarian efforts on the island and help those who have been injured and left without homes and shelter."

On Tuesday, a 7.0-magnitude earthquake and several strong aftershocks ravaged the poverty-stricken nation, and thousands have been feared dead.

Angelina Jolie and Brad Pitt Support Victims of Haiti Earthquake

Brad Pitt and Angelina Jolie expressed their deep sorrow on Tuesday night (January 12) over the widespread loss of life that occurred in the Haiti earthquake earlier in the day.

“We are devastated by the news from Haiti,” the couple said in a statement to JustJared.com. “We will work closely with our good friend Wyclef Jean to support the humanitarian efforts on the island and help those who have been injured and left without homes and shelter.”

Wyclef released his own statement on how YOU can help: “Haiti today faced a natural disaster of unprecedented proportion, an earthquake unlike anything the country has ever experienced. The magnitude 7.0 earthquake – and several very strong aftershocks – struck only 10 miles from Port-au-Prince.

“I cannot stress enough what a human disaster this is, and idle hands will only make this tragedy worse. The over 2 million people in Port-au-Prince tonight face catastrophe alone. We must act now.

“President Obama has already said that the U.S. stands ‘ready to assist’ the Haitian people. The U.S. Military is the only group trained and prepared to offer that assistance immediately. They must do so as soon as possible. The international community must also rise to the occasion and help the Haitian people in every way possible.

“Many people have already reached out to see what they can do right now. We are asking those interested to please do one of two things: Either you can use your cell phone to text “Yele” to 501501, which will automatically donate $5 to the Yele Haiti Earthquake Fund (it will be charged to your cell phone bill), or you can visit Yele.org and click on DONATE.”
